Timisoara lit a fuse for the Romanian Revolution.
On December 20, 1989, Timisoarans took to
the streets proclaiming their freedom from
the Ceausescu regime, and, following earlier
clashes, army troops no longer put up a fight.
Called "The Garden City," Timisoara
is known to bust out in flowers, thanks to
its mild climate and 1,482 acres of green
space. The cityscape also features a Bega
River bridge built by Gustav Eiffel, and the
Metropolitan Cathedral of Banat on Victoria
Square. Local charm is further enhanced by
a pedestrians-only downtown area.
